 Resumo: Este texto procura acompanhar o pensador francês Michel Foucault em seu curso intitulado A Hermenêutica do Sujeito (1982), a partir da pesquisa empreendida na obra do filósofo estoico Lúcio Aneu Séneca. Com este objetivo, indagaremos os efeitos desta incursão teórica em um estudo que pretendeu abordar a relação entre verdade, exercícios espirituais e a dimensão das práticas de liberdade na filosofia Antiga. Neste sentido, analisaremos as críticas do helenista Pierre Hadot, sobre os limites e as possibilidades da leitura de Foucault no contexto dos exercícios espirituais formulados pela filosofia senequiana. Outro plano que se desdobra no presente artigo é compreender como o estudo de uma série de práticas de si na Antiguidade serviu a Foucault não apenas para descamar os estratos históricos da constituição do sujeito, mas para que pudesse empreender tanto uma crítica da atualidade, como uma luta política contra os modos contemporâneos de sujeição.

Abstract:This text seeks to accompany the French thinker Michel Foucault in his course entitled The Hermeneutics of the Subject (1982), based on the research developed in the work of the stoic philosopher Lúcio Aneu Séneca. To this end, we will investigate the effects of this theoretical foray in a study that sought to address the relationship between truth, spiritual exercises and the dimension of freedom practices in ancient philosophy. In this sense, we will analyze the criticisms of Hellenist Pierre Hadot to the limits and possibilities of Foucault’s reading in the context of the spiritual exercises formulated by Seneca’s philosophy. Another plan that unfolds in this article is to understand how the study of a series of practices of the self in Antiquity served Foucault not only to peel the historical strata of the subject’s constitution, but so that he could undertake both a critique of the present, as well as a political struggle against contemporary modes of subjection.
