Resumo: A discussão acerca do problema do livre-arbítrio não pode ser iniciada sem a investigação da origem do mal. Na tênue relação entre ambos encontra-se o poder de decisão, que se torna problemático a partir do momento em que o homem pratica o mal. Diante disso, surge a seguinte questão: por que Deus concedeu ao homem o livre-arbítrio, se é justamente por meio dele que o mal é cometido? Para responder a esse problema, Agostinho fundamenta sua reflexão a partir de suas experiências no maniqueísmo, culminando na elaboração da obra De Libero Arbitrio. Este trabalho propõe analisar a investigação agostiniana, bem como os fundamentos teóricos e argumentativos que sustentam sua tese acerca do livre-arbítrio.

Abstract: The discussion concerning the problem of free will cannot begin without an investigation into the origin of evil. Within the subtle relationship between the two lies the power of decision, which becomes problematic once human beings commit evil. This raises the following question: why did God grant free will to humanity if it is precisely through it that evil is committed? In addressing this issue, Augustine grounds his reflection in his experiences with Manichaeism, culminating in the work De Libero Arbitrio. This paper aims to analyze Augustine’s investigation and the theoretical and argumentative foundations that underpin his thesis on free will.
