Resumo: O objetivo do presente artigo é incitar a discussão sobre a assim chamada filosofia africana, particularmente a partir dos trabalhos do missionário e etnólogo belga R. P. Placide Tempels, onde ele expõe o que ele chama de filosofia banto, como fruto de seu trabalho evangelizador junto a variadas comunidades no então Congo belga, quando da existência dos impérios coloniais europeus na África — anteriormente, portanto, ao processo de descolonização. Para tanto, discutimos a relação entre filosofia ocidental e não ocidental, a pertinência do termo filosofia para estas produções extraeuropeias, e introduzimos ao debate da filosofia ser entendida enquanto estratégia, a partir de Toynbee, Huntington e Luiz, nos marcos de um pensamento de ascendência pós-estruturalista, fundamentalmente Foucault e suas pesquisas sobre epistemologia política. Após, debatemos as concepções ontológicas e epistemológicas dos bantos, segundo Tempels, discutindo com comentadores. Por fim, elaboramos um debate crítico sobre os alcances da proposta de Tempels e seu papel na constituição de uma filosofia africana.

Abstract: The objective of this paper is to incite the discussion about the so-called African philosophy, particularly from the works of the Belgian missionary and ethnological R. P. Placid, in which he exposes what he calls the Bantu philosophy, as result of his labor within a lot of communities from the old Belgian Congo, in the colonized areas on Africa so, previously of the decolonization process. For that, we discuss the relationship between Western philosophy, the pertinence of the term philosophy for such type of extraeuropean productions, and we introduce the debate of philosophy understood as strategy, departing from Toynbee, Huntington and Luiz, in the frames of a poststruturalist thought, basically Foucault and his researches on political epistemology. After that, we discuss the ontology and epistemology from Bantus, according to Tempels, debating with commentators. In the end, we elaborate a critical discussion about the reach of Tempels proposals and his role in the constitution of the African philosophy.
