 Resumo: Este artigo examina aspetos do pensamento positivista do intelectual português Teófilo Braga (1843-1924) sobre ética pública e religião cívica, em relação à necessidade de se promover uma pedagogia democrática em torno da celebração de comemorações cívicas. Essas ritualizações deviam ser sínteses de épocas para radicar um novo contrato social, satisfazendo as necessidades do sentimento humano. O método que seguimos faz uso da comparação entre a ideia de religião civil de Rousseau, a ideia de síntese afetiva da religião da humanidade de Comte e a ideia de síntese afetiva dos centenários de Teófilo.

Abstract: This article examines aspects of the positivistic though of the Portuguese intellectual Teófilo Braga (1843-1924) about public ethics and civic religion, as regards to the necessity of promoting a democratic pedagogy around the celebration of civic celebrations. These rituals should each be a summary of an age in order to determine a new social contract, thus meeting the needs of the human feeling. The method that we follow uses the comparison between Rousseau’s notion of civil religion, Comte’s affective synthesis of religion of humanity and Teófilo’s affective synthesis of centenaries.
