RESUMO:O presente trabalho tem como objetivo esclarecer a relação entre razão e paixões no pensamento de Thomas Hobbes. O filósofo seiscentistaentende que o pacto para criação do poder comum é baseado na capacidade humana de transformação racional da realidade. Ainda que assevere que os homens são movidos por suas paixões, e que conceba o racional como cálculo dos meios para satisfazer as paixões, todavia é a mesma razão, impulsionada pelas paixões (sobretudo medo e esperança), que permite aos homens a superação de sua condição natural. Para tanto, o texto explica a teoria hobbesiana da percepção, sua concepção de linguagem e a relação entre as paixões e a razão para a criação do Estado.

ABSTRACT:This paper aims to clarify the relation ship between reason and passionat the thought of Thomas Hobbes. The seventeen th century philosopher believes that the agrément to create the common Power is based on the human capacity for rational transformation of reality. Although asserts that men are driven by their passions, and to deviserational and calculating means to satisfy the passions, however is the same reason, driven by passion (especially fear and hope) that allows men tôo vercome their natural condition. Therefore, the text explains the Hobbesian theory of perception, his conception of language and the relation ship between the passions and the reason for the creation of the state.
