Resumo: O artigo discute a questão da liberdade humana a partir da situação hipotética na qual Hobbes denomina estado de natureza. Se por um lado, os indivíduos têm direito a todas as coisas, por outro, essa liberdade torna-se inútil a cada homem. As comodidades da vida não podem ser obtidas e a vida humana é vivida de modo curto, brutal, sórdido e infeliz. A liberdade desmedida é desfavorável às relações interpessoais. A liberdade útil só é provável na sociedade. Mas, o homem é um animal apolítico e por natureza tende a amar a liberdade ilimitada e o domínio sobre seus iguais.

Abstract: The article discusses the issue of human freedom from the hypothetical situation in which Hobbes called the state of nature. On one hand, individuals have a right to all things, on the other, that freedom becomes useless to each. The amenities of life cannot be obtained, and human life is lived short, brutal, nasty and unhappy. The unbridled freedom is unfavorable to interpersonal relationships. Freedom is only likely useful in society. But, man is an animal and apolitical by nature tend to love the freedom and unlimited dominion over his fellows.
