Resumo: O presente artigo tem por objetivo explanar a teoria política de Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679) ressaltando o papel das paixões, em especial o medo e a esperança, apontadas pelo próprio autor como fundamentais para o processo de construção e consolidação do Estado Civil. O estado de natureza hobbesiano é conhecido pela guerra de todos contra todos, pela situação de hostilidade e insegurança entre os indivíduos. Na medida em que o homem é o lobo do próprio homem e cada indivíduo teme a morte violenta, é por meio das paixões do medo e da esperança que os indivíduos se aliam uns com os outros e estabelecem o contrato social conhecido por ser a transição do estado de natureza ao Estado Civil.Nesta perspectiva as paixões indicam aos homens o caminho da paz que seria a fundamentação do Civitas. A metodologia adotada é bibliográfica.

Abstract: The present paper pretends to explain the political theory of Thomas Hobbes highlighting the role of passions, particularly fear and hope which were appointed by the own author as fundamentals for the process of grounding and consolidation of the Civil Society. The Hobbesian State of Nature – widely known for its situation of chaos and hostility – is the fertile ground for the emergence of the passions of fear and hope which enable a union among men that allows the departure of the state of nature to the Civil Society. Such transition is commonly known as Social Contract. The passions that permeate the individual in the state of chaos also appear in the Civitas, but in a reorganized manner by the Sovereign Power and the common law. The methodology adopted in the present work is bibliographical.
