Resumo: Este trabalho versa sobre a problemática ética presente na filosofia de Sponville que resulta numa concepção sobre o conceito de desespero a partir de um fundamento materialista que pretende estipular-se como base para o pensar ético constituindo-se como uma sabedoria para o nosso tempo. Sua análise nos apresenta um período marcado pelo cansaço e decepção fruto de uma vivência pautada na esperança que se postava como consolo dos infortúnios e desânimo perante a tragicidade da vida. Tendo ficado preso as ilusões e esperado por elas, tais indivíduos passavam pela vida e não conseguiam serem felizes. Todo homem deseja ser feliz. Essa é sua compreensão. E porque não é? Simplesmente porque espera ser e quando se espera, dificilmente será. Tomaremos como obra fundamental para desenvolver nossa argumentação a obra; Tratado do Desespero e da Beatitude em que temos a ênfase sobre a concepção de desespero como sabedoria e afirmação do tempo presente. Mas, também tomaremos outras obras, quando necessário, para melhor anunciar e evidenciar a estrutura de seu pensamento consoante a nossa temática. Portanto, o que pretende é demonstrar e ratificar, a partir de seu pensamento, é a importância da filosofia como base para uma formulação reflexiva que nos assegure a felicidade e uma vivência ética no momento presente.

Abstract: This paper deals with the ethical issue presents in Sponville‟s philosophy that results in a conception about the concept of despair from a materialistic foundation that aims to stipulate itself as a basis for ethical thinking which is constituted as wisdom for our time. His analysis presents us a period marked by the weariness and disappointment fruit of an experience based on the hope which had been posted as a solace of misfortunes and encouragement in face of the tragicity of life. After they have been trapped by the illusions and waited for them, these individuals passed through the life and could not be happy. Every man wishes to be happy. This is his understanding. And why not? Simply because the man expects to be and when he expects, he hardly will be. We will take the Treatise of Despair and Happiness as fundamental work to develop our argument. In this work, we have the emphasis about the conception of despair as wisdom and affirmation of the present time. But we will also take other works, when necessary, to better advertise and evince the structure of Sponville‟s thought according to our theme. Thus, what we intend is to demonstrate and ratify from his thinking, the importance of philosophy as the basis for a reflective formulation to ensure us the happiness and ethical living in the present moment.
