Resumo: Este artigo analisa aspectos do pensamento de Augusto Alves da Veiga (1849-1924), que deram consistência a uma proposta política republicana de matriz federal, concebida como solução face à crise da Monarquia Portuguesa na transição do século XIX para o século XX. O seu trabalho de reflexão teórica e de formulação prática iniciou-se nos finais dos anos 70 do século XIX, obtendo sistematização na obra Política Nova: Ideias para a reorganização da nacionalidade portuguesa (1911). Perante o diagnóstico de um poder de Estado fortemente centralizado em Portugal, encontrou a solução descentralizadora na autonomia dos municípios, federados em oito Estados provinciais, que se uniriam numa República Confederal Parlamentar.

Abstract: This article analyses some aspects of the thought of Augusto Alves da Veiga (1849-1924), which fleshed out on a republican political proposal of federal origin that was conceived as a solution to face the crisis in the Portuguese Monarchy in the transition from the nineteen century to the twentieth century. His work of theoretical reflection and practical formulation began in the late 1870’s and its systematization can be seen in the work New Politics: Ideas for the reorganization of the Portuguese nationality (1911). Before a diagnosis of a State power strongly centralized in Portugal, he found the decentralizing solution in the autonomy of the municipalities, federated in eight provincial States, which should be unite into a Confederal Parliamentary Republic.
