Abstract: This text presents a historical-descriptive and critical overview of Brazilian education between 2000 and 2021. It analyzes the main educational policies implemented during this period, highlighting tensions between the project of integral human formation and the neoliberal rationality that gradually hegemonized the Brazilian educational landscape. The study engages in dialogue with Critical Pedagogy authors such as Charlot, Freire, Franco, Saviani, and Libâneo, particularly regarding the denunciation of the “perverse dualism” that separates the school of knowledge, aimed at elites, from the school of social assistance directed toward the popular classes. It examines the National Education Plan (PNE) and the National Common Curricular Base (BNCC), arguing that these policies shifted the centrality of scientific knowledge toward a competency-based pedagogy aligned with market and managerial logic. The paper also analyzes the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic on the democratization of public education and advocates for the reconstruction of schooling grounded in a scientific, ethical, critical, and emancipatory praxis committed to social justice.
