Resumo: A história da loucura está muito ligada a história do surgimento dos manicômios, muito relacionada à incapacidade dos doentes mentais o que produziu preconceitos e isolamento social dessa população, enfatizando que o manicômio não levava e não levou a cura. O objetivo desse estudo foi analisar a história da saúde mental no Brasil e identificar avanços com relação ao tratamento das pessoas com transtornos mentais. Conceituar saúde mental é algo complexo e que envolve diversos fatores de risco. Para a construção dessa revisão de literatura foi utilizada uma metodologia documental histórica, com pesquisa bibliográfica e levantamento de artigos científicos. Para apresentar a história da saúde mental no Brasil nos últimos 20 anos e discutir conteúdos da saúde pública, ciências Psicologia e Psiquiatria, luta antimanicomial. Conclui-se que são necessárias políticas públicas de saúde mais eficazes para promover proteger e restaurar a saúde mental no Brasil e no mundo de maneira urgente. Ainda há um grande percurso para resolvermos os problemas da saúde mental: desde o preconceito até a reabilitação psicossocial.

Abstract: The history of madness is closely linked to the history of the emergence of asylums, closely related to the perceived incapacity of mental patients, which led to prejudice and social isolation of this population, emphasizing that the asylum did not and did not lead to a cure. The objective of this study was to analyze the history of mental health in Brazil and identify advances in the treatment of people with mental disorders. Conceptualizing mental health is complex and involves several risk factors. For the construction of this literature review, a historical documentary methodology was used, with bibliographic research and a survey of scientific articles. To present the history of mental health in Brazil over the last 20 years and discuss content related to public health, the sciences of Psychology and Psychiatry, and the anti-asylum movement. It is concluded that more effective public health measures are needed to promote, protect, and restore mental health in Brazil and the world urgently. There is still a long way to go to solve mental health problems: from prejudice to psychosocial rehabilitation.
