 Résumé: Penser la politique et ignorer l’engagement ? Il peut paraître surprenant de voir associer le nom d’Éric Weil à un thème tel que l’engagement. En effet, on ne lui connaît ni tribune, ni pétition, ni même une participation à une quelconque manifestation sans parler de l’adhésion à une organisation politique. Tous ces comportements, par lesquels l’engagement des intellectuels se signale aussi bien à son époque que de nos jours, sont ignorés dans la biographie d’Éric Weil. Le récent ouvrage qu’Alain Deligne consacre au jeune Weil ne rapporte aucun écrit militant ou contestataire, il mentionne tout au plus une défense du statut d’étudiant-travailleur derrière laquelle il est difficile d’identifier une option politique. Comment, dans ces conditions, l’engagement pourrait-il être entrevu dans les textes d’Éric Weil? Face à cette question, il est facile de rappeler que Weil ne s’est pourtant pas désintéressé de la politique. Il a même développé une philosophie politique systématique et a publié plusieurs articles de philosophie politique regroupés en différents ouvrages. De nombreux travaux ont été consacrés à ces textes, notamment ceux de Patrice Canivez^, qui continue de les relire depuis plus de trente ans. Le présent texte interroge le rapport du philosophe Eric Weil à la thématique de l’engagement. Il montre comment sa conception systématique de la démarche de la philosophie politique semble l’éloigner de l’engagement et souligne la préférence de Weil pour le point de vue du gouvernement dans la considération de la politique. Il a abouti, cependant, à révéler chez Weil une distinction entre engagement fondamental et engagement militant qui permet au philosophe de se préoccuper des conditions d’épanouissement de l’humanité sans vouloir s’identifier à un mouvement politique. L’engagement se ramène, en définitive, à l’attachement au sens contre la menace de la violence.

Abstract: Thinking politics and ignoring engagement? It may seem surprising to see Éric Weil’s name associated with a topic like engagement. In fact, he was never known for speaking out, petitioning or even taking part in any kind of demonstration, let alone participating in a political organization. Éric Weil’s biography ignores all these behaviors, which were the hallmark of intellectual engagement in his time, as well as today. Alain Deligne’s recent book on the young Weil does not mention any militant or protest writings; at most, it mentions a defense of the student-worker status, behind which it is difficult to identify a political option. How, then, could engagement be discerned in Éric Weil’s writings? Faced with this question, it is easy to remember that Weil was not uninterested in politics. He even developed a systematic political philosophy and published several articles on political philosophy grouped together in different works. Many works have been dedicated to these texts, especially those by Patrice Canivez, who has continued to re-read them for over thirty years. This article examines philosopher Eric Weil’s relationship with the theme of engagement. It shows how his systematic conception of the approach to political philosophy seems to distance him from engagement and highlights Weil’s preference for the government’s point of view when considering politics. However, the result reveals in Weil a distinction between fundamental engagement and militant engagement that allows the philosopher to concern himself with the conditions for the realization of humanity without wanting to identify himself with a political movement. Ultimately, engagement leads to the option of meaning over the threat of violence.

Resumo: Pensar a política e ignorar o engajamento? Pode parecer surpreendente ver o nome de Éric Weil associado a um tema como o engajamento. De fato, ele nunca foi conhecido por falar, fazer petições ou até mesmo participar de qualquer tipo de manifestação, muito menos por participar de uma organização política. A biografia de Éric Weil desconhece todos esses comportamentos, que eram a marca registrada do engajamento dos intelectuais em sua época, assim como hoje. O recente livro de Alain Deligne sobre o jovem Weil não menciona nenhum escrito militante ou de contestação; no máximo, menciona uma defesa do status de estudante-trabalhador, por trás da qual é difícil identificar uma opção política. Como, então, o engajamento poderia ser discernido nos escritos de Éric Weil? Diante dessa pergunta, é fácil lembrar que Weil não era desinteressado em política. Ele chegou inclusive a desenvolver uma filosofia política sistemática e publicou vários artigos sobre filosofia política agrupados em diferentes obras. Muitos trabalhos foram dedicados a esses textos, especialmente os de Patrice Canivez, que continua a relê-los há mais de trinta anos. Este artigo examina a relação do filósofo Eric Weil com o tema do engajamento. Ele mostra como sua concepção sistemática da abordagem da filosofia política parece distanciá-lo do engajamento e destaca a preferência de Weil pelo ponto de vista do governo ao considerar a política. No entanto, o resultado revela em Weil uma distinção entre engajamento fundamental e engajamento militante que permite que o filósofo se preocupe com as condições para a realização da humanidade sem querer se identificar com um movimento político. Em última análise, o engajamento conduz à opção pelo sentido contra a ameaça de violência.
